It was horrible. I remember being upset about it at the time, and I'm still upset about it. I still think it was a squandered opportunity, taking a situation for granted that so few people get into. It makes me look back and think, unfortunately, Dokken didn't deserve to have the success we could have had because of our attitudes and the way that we squandered opportunities.

After Dokken broke up, you kept really busy.

Yes. I had my own band, I played in MSG for awhile, Dio for a few years, played on scads of records. I wrote a lot of songs and fell in love with my instrument again, fell in love with music again. I went through some tough times emotionally, but for me it was really valuable because I really fell in love with music again.

At the end of Dokken, the lifestyle killed a lot of the enjoyment. I got a lot of that back. I reacquainted myself with my craft and regained a passion that was my original passion when I was a kid. It wasn't about the money or the fame or any crap like that, it was about music and the joy of making music.

Do you anticipate doing another album with George Lynch?

I hope so. We'll have to see how everything goes. I would love it. It was a lot of fun to do, and I'm really pleased with the record. I think musically, it's the best thing I've ever done.
