Garden Reading in the Midwest

Autumn is definitely here in the Midwest. The days are getting cooler and shorter. The leaves are turning the beautiful hues of fall colors. The lawn doesn't need mowed as frequently as in the spring and summer seasons. Tulip, daffodil and many other type of fall bulbs are being snapped up at the garden centers to be planted in the ground for a beautiful burst of spring color in the year 2000. Many scarecrows are showing up in yards and gardens surrounded by those wonderful orange pumpkins, squash and gourds. Thousands of other signs of autumn are upon us. One true sign of autumn in my home is that I have a few minutes in the evening when the sun is setting earlier to finally enjoy my gardening magazines that arrived in my mailbox this summer. I always glance through them, immediately when I pull them out of my mailbox but never take the time to study them in depth during the busy gardening season. During the last few weeks I have really engaged into my gardening magazines. I would like to share with my readers some of the periodicals that I have found to be helpful with gardening tips and techniques. By no means, am I promoting these magazines to be subscribed to over any other periodical that I have not listed. Also, due to time constraint I am not able to give you a full blown list of all the gardening magazines that I actually would love to curl up with and read from cover to cover.

Birds and Blooms by Remains Publications is a delightful magazine for the viewing of beautifully landscaped gardens submitted by everyday people like you and me. It is refreshing to see elegant gardens that belong to people I can relate to and knowing that you don't have to be the rich and famous type to do a grand job of landscaping. This magazine features many unique and festive birdhouses that have been submitted by the public for your viewing pleasure. The section that I enjoy the most in this publication is the section titled-- Ready for a Walk? It is featured in the center of the magazine with approximately ten pages devoted to seasonal showcases around the country of various backyards. Once again, these pictures are very down to earth, that could possibly be taken in your own backyard. Birds and Blooms is published bimonthly in the USA.
