Personality in the Midwest

© Sueann Ahrens

Spring has arrived in the Midwest!!! As in years past, I always get overly excited with the first sign of spring to begin working in my garden. I get a special kind of pleasure when I nuture the earth right in my very own garden beds. However, when the one hundred degree dog days of summer roll around I do have the tendency to wonder why I am out pulling weeds in this type of weather. Then, fall rolls around with cooler days, so once again I am overly excited to be out in my garden beds again and truly hate to think of the first killing frost.

I have many reasons why I enjoy the hobby of gardening. To begin with, it is an excellent source of exercise for my body and fresh air for my lungs. Also, I have three children under the age of nine years old who I love to death and who help me in my garden immensely. However, once in awhile I do like to escape to my garden by myself for some peace and quiet. My gardens help me to relieve any stress or tension I may be acquiring through the course of the day. Yes, another reason I love to garden is for the beautiful look of a well tended garden. The number one reason for my love of gardening is that it brings out my own personality in me. Just as a persons home reflects their lifestyle and hobbies so can your garden area.

This gardening season add your very own personality to your garden. Before you buy one plant or turn one shovel of soil take time to walk around your garden area, lawn and house. Look very carefully at each and every area. Think about what you want your garden area to convey to your neighbors, friends, drive-by traffic and mainly to YOURSELF.

A beautiful garden is more than just healthy plants arranged attractively in your bed. Or a garden with very few weeds showing. It's the finishing touches that you, yourself have personally added to your garden. It is these final touches that you have distinctly given to your garden to make the area fun and creative. Adding these personal touches is an easy way to make your already beautiful garden beds more successful.

You may find garden benches, trellis, glazing balls, arbors, stepping stones, a brass sundial and elegant water fountains at any near-by department store or your local garden center. All of the above items are great to personalize you garden. However, do not overlook the unique and inexpensive things which you may have right in your own back yard or at a neighbor's garage sale.

Is it possible to put a water garden in a Minnesota back yard or are our winters a problem for that?
