Themes in the HeartlandWhere is the summer going to so fast? I love the month of September when the nights get cool and you need to throw on a sweatshirt to walk through your garden beds. However when September rolls around, reality sets in that soon the floweres will be gone and the winter winds will be howling. Oh well, before you know it then spring will be here again. Before I start my subject this month I would like to invite you to participate in my contest that I will be running through the month of September dealing with this months topic of Themes. Be sure to check out the end of my article for more details. As stated above, this month's article is dealing with Themes in the Garden. A garden is not just soil full of flowers or vegetables. It is also a place to walk and relax. It is like designing an outside room for your house. Just as you design an interior room in your home you use themes and added touches which bring out your personality. This is exactly what we do when we plan a theme for our garden beds. Themes help draw attention to certain areas in your garden and they form a unity in that area too. Whether your garden is a patio container garden or on an acre or more you will discover new things about yourself and what makes you happy in life when you plan a theme for your garden. . A nice theme to display in your garden is a collection theme. Almost everyone today collects something. Whether it's angels, frogs, birdhouses or whatever, carry your collections over into your garden theme. I have collected rabbits since I was approximately five years old. Needless to say I not only have an interior room full of rabbits in our house, but I also have a garden full of wooden, ceramic, pottery and metal rabbits in my garden beds. I am in the process of making an area of one of my garden beds into the theme, Peter Rabbit's Garden. I have incorporated into this area a small picket fence with a tiny coat stuck to the bottom of the fence, just as in the story of Peter Rabbit when he crawled under the fence to get away from Mr. McGregor. To go along with this theme, I added a few child-sized garden utensils that were mentioned in the story. I must admit it is rather cute and it has stirred up some interesting conversations.
