Shadows

Shadows on the wall are misleading. At first sight they loom larger than life. I suppose in the same context, hearing impairment effects the radius just as long as you allow the disability to control you.

In the course of any given day while I forge ahead with activities I need to do, there will come a time when my energy lags. I become frustrated convinced there is something wrong with me. After a little while I realize I don't have the stamina I used to have.

Since I started writing at Suite 101 my life hasn't changed a lot. I am still dealing with a hearing loss and trying to adjust in a hearing world. Almost three years later I have to accept the fact the world has become different. Whether I agree with it or not, this is how it is.

Writing professionally has progessed throughout the last three years. Computers have taken away the close contact we use to have before regular mail became obsolete. When I send out the queries most of the time it is now done by e-mail. I noticed one of the rare magazines who still uses the postal mail, is Rosie O' Donnells' magazine titled Rosie.

The writing road became bumpy a few weeks ago for me. Trying to meet two deadlines simultaneously, I began to feel swamped. I had hoped the travel articles I wrote about would be published in May, this year.

The lady editor was understanding. She allowed me to mail the required two snapshots to the publication. Via regular mail, in plenty of time (before the May 15 deadline) I sent by computer the two stories of the Nevada casinos.

Since the plans to travel to Kentucky were cancelled, we decided to drive to Laughlin, NV for a few days of rest and relaxation. Lisa Morgin Blackwelder, the editor of Trips and Journeys, had sent me a reply e-mail to my sent articles.

Due to timing or lack thereof, I had included critiques of the Sparks Hotel, even though she had instructed me to focus on the hotel in general. I had also included bits about the writers conference I had attended, which I was instructed not to do. She informed me it was neccessary to edit out those parts of the articles. She then graciously asked me if she could edit the two stories into one longer story. The new date of publishing will now be in August 2002. I was indeed amazed and relieved she chose to combine the two articles and publish my work in August.

I don't know how you see yourself. In the three years I have been here at Suite 101, I imagine many of the thoughts I had prior to being here have changed. How do you see yourself? ...
