In A Perfect World

In a perfect world there wouldn't be pain and sorrow. There wouldn't be diseases which cripple and kill or life-threatening situations where people die. How could there be war or despair in a perfect world?

I believe we must reflect and realize in our daily lives there will be many times in which we have no control over the outcome of lives tragedies. When I think of my hearing impairment, well, it seems so obscure to the attack on America on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 in New York, Washington, DC and PA.

Now just a week later, it is very important OUR COUNTRY commemorates the MANY BRAVE AMERICANS who gave their lives, so the rest of OUR COUNTRY could continue to enjoy freedom. As the Media brought the deaths and destruction into our homes, I was filled with mixed emotions, pride and painful tears. Almost nine years ago on Veteran's Day in 1992, I stood with my family at my father's funeral. I watched while several Pallbearers carried my father's body to his final resting place. I was in a daze as one of them handed the folded Flag to me. I was proud my father had been a Veteran of WWII but the Flag symbolized completely to my conscious mind of his passing. I sympathize with all of the families searching for their own family members.

When I began composing this week's article, I had hoped my words wouldn't sound like an editorial. I never wanted to seem partial, however, I do want to share a few of my own recollections of this past week, to help bring us all a little closer to one another. Words have the ability to unite people.

I must admit by Friday afternoon, the depression and helplessness started to overcome my spirit. My roommate and I found a little sanctuary at a nearby movie theatre. Later in the evening, as we headed for home we stepped off our bus and were met by several people on the street corner carrying candles and the flag. It then dawned on us that at 7:00 PM people were paying honor and tribute to the many Brave Americans who lost their lives on this EVIL,VICIOUS AND COWARDLY ATTACK ON AMERICA.

Ironically, another memory resurfaced when I saw the people with their America Flags. Believe it or not, during the Vietnam War in the mid 60's, anyone who wore the American Flag, (as in a shirt, dress, jacket or hotpants, etc.) were either fined and/or imprisoned for defacing the Honor of the Country's Flag. Who knew? Ah well, it's a peculiar and beautiful world in which we live.
