I have noticed since my hearing impairment, depending on the situation I find myself in, I either stay meek and go with the flow, or I want to raise the roof to make a change. Although I have grown to become more confident, within the past couple of years, about fitting into the hearing world, I still find on some occasions I put an emphasis on the lack of my hearing ability.
Society as a whole seems to have abandoned the hearing impaired, leaving them to pretty much fend for themselves most of the time. I'm not quite sure of the reason, they seem to want to make us stay isolated. In my opinion, I find isolation is a no win soluation for my hearing loss. I would rather gather with my hearing friends, then stay at home alone. I have a need to communicate even though I struggle with this on a daily basis. When I've gone online to a chat room to visit with other hearing impaired people, some of the other people have helped me realize I am experiencing the same problems they do. When you free yourself from the depression which sometimes occurs as the result of having a hearing loss, you find yourself able to join others and have a wonderful time with them. During this holiday season it would be a shame not to partake in the festivities going on in your neighborhood or community. The important thing to remember is to feel good about yourself and what you're doing with your life. I was on a vacation recently in Laughlin, Nevada, enjoying a snack in a small restaurant which was adjacent to the Colorado River. I noticed two women signing to each other. They seemed to be having a tremendous evening, oblivious to the fact they were being watched. I had gone on this vacation in particular to see a concert and after receiving our tickets at will call and going to our seats, I realized there would be a downside to this show. The concert was a little hard for me to hear, mostly (thank goodness) only during the conversational portions. David Cassidy performed approximately 30 minutes from his stage show "At The Copa". Normally he performs the entire show with Sheena Easton, however, this show was a shorter version, without Sheena Easton, as the main portion of this concert was to be David Cassidy in Concert.
