Can You ImagineCan you imagine what you would do if you suddenly lost your hearing? The future that you would see for yourself would be bleak. All your worst nightmares couldn't come close to the reality you would have to deal with in your new life. Any disability can be a frightening experience. Does it take a special type of person to overcome such a drastic change in your life? Many ordinary people are handling their disablities when life throws them a curve ball. Norman Bass was a former two sports pro, (Major league Baseball and NFL Football) in the early 60's. He lost much of his hearing due to a series of illnesses. Norman didn't let that set back get him down. He's featured in the July 6th issue of USA Today, as one of the Table Tennis players to compete in the 2000 Paralympic Games. This man has given new meaning in overcoming lives obstacles. If you can't imagine what it feels like to be put into this kind of life changing situation, you should try to put yourself in the shoes of people like Norman. One day you're able to hit winning home runs out of the park, and the next day is so different (without any advance notice) as your ability to play the game has completely diminished. Imagine the frustration you are feeling, as the reality of the situation sets in. Something you have loved, and been able to do for years, is suddenly gone from your grasp, and you must move on with your life. I am constantly reminded how I felt. I was quite humbled and very confused, at the direction my life would be heading. To be quite honest, my life was turned topsy-turvey, as I tried to make sense of it all. Imagine being on a Roller Coaster ride that seems to never end. You live with the uncertainty, every day is full of challenges for you to conquer. Imagine all the strength you'll need to draw from as you try to believe in yourself so the road ahead will become clearer. You will see amazing things happen in your life. Imagine you are still the same person you were before you became hearing impaired. All that has changed is your ability to hear the world. Now, as I walk in the neighborhood, I am sometimes saddened, when due to heavy traffic, I'm no longer able to hear the sounds of the beautiful birds in the trees talking back and forth with each other. When the traffic has died down, and it's later in the evening, I can once again hear the sweet singing of the birds.
