Commute With NatureNow that it's time for spring cleaning, I've decided to make changes in my life. After all, the weather is warmer, my desire to stay outside has increased. As I sit in the apartment courtyard, I feel a keen sense of serenity, blending in with nature. Any problems that have been troubling me, just float away. I relax and find a new and exciting peace of mind. The comparison with what you do with your life, is simular to when you're working in a garden. You need to cultivate the soil, pull out weeds, and make sure there's plenty of sunshine. Time is your friend, not your enemy. It's encouraging to watch the seeds grow, and flourish into healthy sprouts. I've always enjoyed the outdoors. Sometimes I sketch a drawing, while I'm enjoying the fresh air. The quiet moments are a calming break from the regular activities of the day. One change I'd like to make in my life, would be to accept situations I can't control. When something happens to your hearing ability, it projects a strain on your emotional state. I find when I'm involved with sports it helps me to unwind. One of my favorite sports is bowling. I read in my local newspaper, about a 17 year old boy, who's legally blind. He's said to be the hardest working gentlemen on the local wrestling team. Santiago Moran is on the school's program for visually impaired students in Temple City, CA. Another story in the same paper deals with an alumni from Cal State University Northridge. The Alumnus Mike Day, was chosen to be honored this year, after the Board discovered he was the only handicapped student in the country to receive a Masters degree in chemistry, in 1991. Mike admitted, "I've spent alot of years moping around, waiting for the end to come." I totally identify with those feelings of inadequacy, which Mike felt during the beginning of his handicap. Completing college can seem like a lifetime away, then add a twist of fate, like Mike's, where you hit a shallow wave, and your life is changed by nature. These are the types of changes in ones life, where one has no control. Some say, when you're dealt lemons you make lemonade, yet until you've been dealt the lemon, in your life, where you're forced to make those drastic changes, how could anyone be expected to walk a mile in those shoes! It's my personal belief that God has a reason for everything that occurs in our lives. As Mike's mother explained, in the article, "Mike feels like maybe the Lord took him off his feet to stop him from wasting his life." Mike never has to worry about that happening, as he's a Professor at Cal Tech in Southern California.
