A Paltry Pantry?

I have said it before, I'll say it again, a well-stocked pantry is a gal's best friend. Not having to duck out to the grocery store just to get dinner on the table is wonderful. Living that way on a day in-day, day-out basis is glorious. I wouldn't exaggerate about such things.

Pantries can either be full of a bunch of stuff you'll never use, like hearts of palm and creamed corn buried in the dark corners or full of things you use constantly. If you're good at stocking your pantry, the only thing you'll need to concern yourself with is rotating your stock (yep, just like a grocery store!)

For newbie pantry stockers, there is an answer and there is hope. Here I come to save the day! It's Healthy Mom to the rescue! We are talking about healthy stuff here, but understand something also. I am not made out of endless amounts of cash and don't spend frivolously. Even if I were, I wouldn't. So take your time stocking your pantry, look for specials and sales and then go crazy buying canned tomatoes, if they happen to be a great deal. In the meantime, go ahead and get some if you need them, but save the bulk buying when it's a little--or a lot, cheaper. (once a cheapskate, always a cheapskate I guess!)

If you are living in tight quarters and feel you can't afford a pantry, start a massive decluttering plan and start looking. If you're smart and creative, you can always pull a rabbit out of your hat. During the Y2K madness, (okay, I'll admit it!) I had cases of canned goods under my bed, the kids beds and dressers. I pulled stuff out and rotated with stuff from the cupboards. So it wasn't the most convenient. It worked, though.

Even if you have no pantry space, you can easily make pantry space out of almost anything, like I mentioned earlier, the linen closet. What do you do with the linens? Here is a place where you need to declutter. First, only two sets of sheets per bed. One set is obviously on the beds, the other set is folded very spare and flat and is stored in-between the mattress and box spring. The next issue to deal with is towels. At my house, we have 8 towels. Two per person. I use big hooks in the bathroom and everyone has their own hook, with their own towel. The second towel is hung on the back of everyone's door so at this point, if you're following this at all, there is obviously no need for a linen closet anymore. And in my old farmhouse, there isn't one so that's a moot point, but in your house if you have a linen closet and no pantry, you can now have one.
