Filling a Hole? Or Feeding a Soul?

There is a real tendency to see the goal of feeding our children to be more akin to that of fixing holes in the walls--a little spackle and you're done with it.

Children aren't meant to be filled that way--they need more than something in their tummies. They need real food. Food that will allow them to grow and become all they are meant to be. Food that has nutrients in it that will actually build the body in a positive way. And that simply cannot be done when they are being filled like wall holes.

The fast food industry has taken a whole generation hostage and we have signed away all rights. Case in point: the public school system. This has got to be big business for these fast food establishments to greedily and easily infiltrate what used to be, a venerated institution of learning.

But instead, your child can get Pizza Hut pizza at school and a big 32 oz. coke to go with it. Sure, the gnawing hunger has been alleviated, but your child is still hungry because all that meal did was take care of the hunger pangs. The body still hasn't been fed. Is it any wonder why 6 million kids are seriously obese in this country? With 5 million just plain overweight kids right behind them?

There is a connection here between fast food and the deterioration of health. We've known that for years. This isn't rocket science. But if we have known that for years, why is this stuff in our schools? Why is it when all of this junky eating has been connected with obesity, ADHD and other LD's, hypertension, diabetes type 2, certain cancers, and high cholesterol, our answer is throw medication at the problem instead of study the SOURCE? Boy, can these people NEVER connect the dots? How hard is this? Has anyone ever seen a line of kids waiting to get their Ritalin at school? Do you really buy that load of nonsense that the reason Ritalin use has shot up over 90% in the last decade is because we have better methods to diagnose it?

On second thought, maybe it's us, the public that's not connecting the dots. If we were, we wouldn't stand for this garbage. We would demand decent food for our kids and stop this insanity, once and for all.
