For Men: Keep Your Prostate HealthyThrash, M.D., a medical pathologist and co-founder and co-director of Uchee Pines Institute, a natural healing center in Seale, Alabama. Fill a tub with enough comfortably hot water to cover the navel, then sit down and soak for 20 to 45 minutes. Follow with a cold bath or shower. Dr. Thrash suggests using this treatment once a day for 30 days or until symptoms subside. Amino Acids: In one study, forty-five men with BPH received a supplement containing three amino acids (glycine, alanine, and glutamic acid), while forty other men with BPH were given a placebo. After three months, 66% of the patients receiving the amino acid mixture showed reduced urinary urgency; 50% had less delay in starting urine flow; 46% had less difficulty in maintaining flow; and 43% had reduced frequency of urination. However, these improvements were reported by less than 15% of the men who received a placebo. It is also important to note that no side effects were reported. It is believed that these amino acids reduce the swelling in the prostate. Beta-sitosterol: As mentioned above, beta-sitosterol, a compound found in many edible plants, has also been found to be helpful for men with BPH. In one double blind study, 200 men with BPH received 20 mg of beta-sitosterol three times a day. The other group received a placebo for six months. Men receiving beta-sitosterol had a significant improvement in urinary flow and an improvement in symptoms. No change was reported in men receiving the placebo. Flower Pollen: Flower pollen has been reported to improve symptoms of BPH. It is conjectured that the flower pollen in some way has an anti-inflammatory effect on the prostate. (Note: Flower pollen is not the same as bee pollen.) Note: If you already have prostate cancer, it would be wise to consider, according to Dr. Sinatra, radiation or surgery along with the nutritional supplements. Consult your medical doctor. Things to Avoid: It is best to avoid or reduce drinking alcohol, eating sugar and starchy foods, drinking caffeine and consuming hydrogenated fats (including margarine). Exposure to tobacco products should also be avoided. Natural Living Adopting a more natural life-style that embraces a balanced diet will go a long way in preventing the inflammation that brings on prostate problems. Combining nutritional changes with hydrotherapy can reduce the chances of developing prostate problems and help improve your condition once you suffer from some form of prostate disease.
