Food Combining: The Rules

Part Three In A Four-Part Series

The Foods We Eat

Every species of mammal has a specific type of digestive system biologically adapted to a particular type of food - from the lion, whose digestive tract is about twelve feet long, to the giraffe, whose digestive tract is about two hundred and eighty feet long! There are carnivorous, herbivorous, omnivorous, graminivorous, and frugivorous animals on this earth. There is some argument as to what type of digestive system the human species possesses, but one thing is certain - humans do not possess all these different types of digestive systems. However, we do eat the diet of the lion, the giraffe, the pig, the horse and the ape. We not only eat the different diets of all these same animals, we eat these foods at the same time at every meal!

Do you eat meat and potatoes together? Do you eat fish and rice? How about chicken and noodles? Eggs and toast? Cheese and bread? Cereal and milk? Yes, eating these particular combinations every day at every meal is not the best thing to do to ensure great health. When all of these foods are thrown together haphazardly and indiscriminately into the stomach, the body can not handle them. Then, when we finish eating, we end up having to medicate ourselves in order for this food to move out of our bloating, cramping, miserably hurting gut. Do we need to ask ourselves why products such as Rolaids, Tums, Pepto-Bismol, Mylanta, Gelusil, Alka-Seltzer, and Milk of Magnesia are billion dollar industries?

Almost all Americans suffer from poor digestion. Much of the foods we eat every day are foods that are improperly combined. Right about now you are probably wondering what else is left for us to eat! But do not worry. There is a variety of wonderful foods for us to eat - we just need to learn how to eat them in proper combinations. There are certain physiological limitations that the human body has which we need to respect. Therefore, we need to seriously consider the consequences of the way in which we accept food into our body. After we eat, the stomach, the digestive tract, and eventually our health, will suffer the consequences of what our mind and our taste buds have decided to do.

The Rules

Do you like baked potatoes? Great! Have a baked potato, but have it with butter, preferably raw butter if you can get it. You can also top that potato with vegetables such as broccoli, zucchini, beans or whatever vegetables you like and have it with a salad. I have tried many different vegetables inside my baked potato and I promise you, it is a meal in itself! Do you want to have pasta? Go right ahead! Fix your pasta with garlic butter, vegetables and a salad. You want to have meat? Eating meat is not a problem. Have meat with vegetables and a salad. Do you want to eat bread? Have the bread with vegetables and salad. You say you like cheese? Take the cheese and chop it up and put it in your salad - but without the croutons. And you can also melt cheese on your vegetables. My favorite cheese is a brand called Alta Dena. I have not eaten anything else since I discovered their wonderful selection of raw cheeses. I have a link on Alta Dena buried somewhere in my bookmarks and as soon as I locate it, I will insert it into this article.
