A New Beginning

© Morning Star

Health and Nutrition has become my life's work, my life's blood, my passion, but it was not always this way. Like many people today, I did not stop long enough from my busy life to think about nutrition and how it related to the quality of my health - that is not until I found myself face to face with a series of chronic and serious health problems beginning in 1983.

To be honest with you, I did absolutely nothing to try to improve my health after receiving a diagnosis of cancer in 1970. I did not have a clue about what I should be doing to improve my health, or that I even had to do any thing at all! I was young and very ignorant of the facts, and to make matters even worse, so were my parents! No one in my family thought about nutrition. It was never a subject we talked about at the dinner table. Oh yes, we all had heard and knew about the "Basic Four" food groups. What a joke! I know now that there is much more to Health and Nutrition than this!

Like so many mothers today, my mother thought that she was doing her best to provide good healthy food and nutrition for her family that she loved so much and cared for. It is sad for me when I stop to think how very little she knew about the harm that she was placing in front of her family each day during mealtimes.

But my mother will never know the extent of the health problems her children continue to suffer with to this day. She died in 1975 at the age of 37 following surgery, from complications directly associated to the disease, Diabetes, which she had suffered with for many years. (Diabetes is just one of the many illnesses which can be greatly helped with the proper use of nutrition.)

My mother did the best she could with the limited tools she had to work with during that time, but you and I have a treasure chest of information and resources available to us today just waiting for us to claim as our very own.

So when are we going to start a new beginning, a new chapter in our lives, and learn how to be and stay healthy? Are we going to wait until something drastic happens, only to find that it may be too late to do anything at all about our health? If you ignore your health, it will go away - this I can promise!
