Kamehameha Day a celebration of Hawaii's Monarchy

The Kamehameha reign spans over 5 generations. From the fearless spirited icon that was Kamehameha the Great to the Hawaii's most affectionate Liholiho.

Hawaii sets aside June 11th to commemorate the monarchy and to remember the rich History of these islands. Banks are closed, on-street parking is free and all state agencies are closed, but since this holiday is only observed by the State of Hawaii, Federal agencies and most retail businesses remain open.

The Big Island celebrations are centered on the Kohala coast in the town of Kamuela. You'll find the original statue of King Kamehameha is at the center of the festivities which include lei drapings, a candlelight procession and music, food booths and fun. A wonderful small town festival and definately a local experience not to be missed!

The largest of the celebrations are located on Oahu. A duplicate of the Kamuela statue is located in front to the territorial building and faces the entrance to Iolani Palace. On the first Friday following June 11th, a lei draping ceremony takes place here. Hula halau's, speakers, fun and merriment make up the activities of the evening. Most of the excitement is in anticipation of the following days events.

The highlight of the celebration is the parade. This parade has the longest parade route of all the parades in Hawaii. It begins at the site of the statute and winds through downtown Honolulu and Waikiki and terminates at Kapiolani Park. The best viewing for this parade is the block fronting the Iolani Palace. Choose a spot that is shaded from the morning sun and absorb the richness of Hawaii's royal past as it is presented to you in architeture and cultural displays. Craft fairs and Hawaiian food are available at the Kawaihao church. Liholiho one of Hawaii's last monarchs is buried there, so be sure to stop and take a good look at his tomb. They also provide a glimpse of modern day Hawaii without the touristy touch.

At the Kapiolani Park end of the parade route is where the party begins! A park festival for visitors and locals alike. Enjoy food booths there, music, sun, fun and people watching!

The Kamehameha Day celebration is truly the event that captures the hearts of Hawaii residents and provides for many levels of enjoyment for all types of visitors as well. Please join us next year!
