The oldest of the major Hawaiian islands and third largest inland size, the natural simplicity of this island has made Kauai very popular over the years. Kauai's tourist development like most everything else on the island is slow-paced, and unobtrusive. Building heights are regulated to a maximum of four stories with guarantee the heights of buildings will not exceed the height of the coconut trees. Tourism is not the focus on Kauai and that is evident in the islands limited development.
Located just 105 miles northwest of Oahu, Kauai is 627 square miles in area and has a diameter of 32 miles. This island is one of the easiest to navigate and explore due to it's circular shape. The topography of Kauai has, for the most part, limit highways and roads to the low-lying shore areas and some limited access to the interior of the island. The isolated interior sections of the islands are steep, mountainous with constant rain. The constant rainfall has made Mt. Waialeale, the second highest peak on the island known as the wettest spot in Hawaii, if not the world. Kauai has a dry and arid leeward shoreline where the vegetation and landscape is desert like from the foothills to the shoreline. Kauai's other coastlines are scattered with palm-lined beaches, waterfalls, coffee and sugar cane plantations. and waterfalls Variations in climate and scenery make Kauai very special adding to the interest and beauty of this island.
Kauai was formed 5 million years ago from a single shield volcano deeply eroded with time and volcanic action. This has resulted in Kauai's ever awe inspiring beauty that range from the Waimea Canyon and the spectacular Na Pali Cliffs along the northern cost of the island. Kauai County consists of the islands of Kauai, Niihau, and uninhabited Lehua and Kaula. The Island of Kauai has an area of approximately 552.3 square miles with 90 miles of coastline. The county seat is Lihue who is headed by an elected mayor with a four-year term and a seven-member council with two-year terms. The population of Kauai is currently about 56,000 who have an average annual income of $25,000. Movie crews are often found on Kauai taking advantage of the islands beautiful and diverse scenery.
