Between the Waikiki Aquarium and the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel, is the War Memorial Natatorium. A memorial dedicated to soldiers who fought in World War I. It is the largest salt-water pool in the United States. It has fallen into disrepair over the years and plans to have it razed are in the works. Just outside the main entrance to the complex is a large boulder commemorating the island soldiers who died in the war. Their names are listed on the boulder's "Roll of Honor" Tablet.

In addition, special events are held here throughout the year. Art exhibitions, festivals, craft fairs and other celebrations make this park a wonderful place to enjoy for everyone. Perhaps the very best day of the year to visit this park is on Kamehameha Day June 11th. Kamehameha Day is now an official state holiday, dedicated to King Kamehameha the Great by King Kamehameha V. It is also the day that King David Kalakaua dedicated this park to Queen Kapiolani in 1871. Hawaii still remembers this with a grand parade that begins in Downtown Honolulu and ends at the Waikiki Shell parking lot. Festivities follow the parade at the park.
