- Get up early and go to Chinatown to pick up dim sum and roast pork. There are two great dim sum places in Chinatown one is Royal Kitchen on River Street and the other is Char Hung Sut. Both require that you get there before 10:00 a.m. to get the best selection. Roast pork and Roast Duck is good almost anywhere in Chinatown. My favorite is located on Maunakea Street between Hotel and King street. While in Chinatown, be sure to pick-up a flower lei or two to take back to your friends at home. Chinatown has the best prices for lei on the island.

- Breakfast at Egg's and Thing's on Kalakaua Avenue. Be prepared to wait, and wait, outside for a table if you do not get there early. Try the pancakes with coconut syrup and Portuguese sausage. This restaurant is crowded noisy and busy, but it's one of Oahu's best breakfast spots.

- Hike Diamond Head. Great exercise and the views from the summit are breathtaking and well worth the 100 stairs! Take a flashlight and a bottle of water and don't forget to buy a shirt to commemorate the occasion.

- Buy a dozen hot Malasadas at Leonard's Bakery in Kapahulu. Such a craving cannot be satisfied with mere substitutions! Malasadas are fresh, sugar coated hole-less donuts made with a Portuguese dough that must be eaten hot. They disappear in a flash!

- Feed the fish and snorkel at Hanauma Bay. The fish are just fantastic and the ocean is warm and clear. Arrive well before 9:30 a.m. to assure yourself of a good parking space, snorkeling equipment and a great spot on the beach. Remember they are closed all day Tuesday.

- Stop by at Haili's at Farmer's Market near Ward Avenue for the Hawaiian lunch plate and Poi. On Thursdays, pick up some Kulolo from Kauai. Hawaiian plate at Haili's consist of the traditional Hawaiian Menu. Poi, which is fresh taro root pounded into a paste consistency. Lomi Salmon which is a cold mildly seasoned tomato, onion and smoked salmon dish resembling salsa. Haupia, a firm coconut pudding, and Kulolo which is a taro and sugar recipe eaten as dessert.

- Head for the North Shore! A drive around the North Shore of Oahu is always a refreshing experience. Make stops along the way at Haleiwa to explore the shops, or to get a quick shave-ice at Matsumoto's, Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay to enjoy the ocean and surfers and be sure to stop at the shrimp stand in Kahuku between the Turtle Bay Hilton and the Polynesian cultural Center to enjoy one of Oahu's best roadside treats!
