Hawaii AirportsBeing an island state, air travel is most important to those in Hawaii. There is no large scale ferry service in between the islands due to the time it takes to travel between islands as well as the ocean conditions that exist in Hawaii. Therefore inter-island air travel is critical for everyone here. There are several airports in Hawaii, the largest is Honolulu international Airport located on the island of Oahu about 10 miles from Waikiki Beach. Here you will find non-stop service to and from several mainland cities one of which is New York City, as well as nonstop service to and from several international cities which include Tokyo, Manila, Papeete and Auckland. In the adjacent, or inter-island terminal, you will find the local airlines that operate inter-island from 5:30 a.m. until about 9:00 p.m. in the evening. On Kauai there are two airports Princeville and Lihue. Lihue is the larger of the two airports and currently you can find non-stop service to and from Lihue from Canada as well as the West Coast. Lihue airport is about an hour drive to or from Princeville and Hanalei and about a 40 mintue drive to or from Poipu. Maui has three airports. Kapalua, Hana, and Kahului. Kapalua and Hana airports only accept flights during daylight hours only, and currently schedules are limited to inter-island service exclusively. Kahului airport is the largest of the three and several large airlines operate non-stop to and from the continental U.S. as well as Canada. Kapalua airport is the airport closest to the Kaanapali and Kapalua resort areas, while Kahului is closer to the Wailea and Kihei ares. On the Big Island of Hawaii, there are two large airports, Kona and Hilo. Kona is located on the west side or sunnier side of the island and Hilo is on the northeastern cost of this island. Hilo airport is currently operating only inter-island flights with Kona airport operated international and domestic service to and from the continental U.S. as well as inter-island flights.
