Kauai Day Trip

Many arrive in the islands with plans for a few days on one island and a few on the other, forsaking another due to time constraints. However, if you include a day trip to a third island, you can still include the island you thought you might have to miss.

A great day trip is one to Kauai. Inter-island flights begin as early as 5:30 a.m. and continue from Honolulu every 15 to twenty minutes throughout the day until 8 p.m. Book a departure about 8 a.m. and take the 30-minute flight over to the Garden Island. Choose a seat on the right hand side (while seated) of the aircraft to take advantage of the views of Oahu as you fly along the leeward coast of Oahu and onward to Kauai.

Upon arrival, follow the curb for a few yards down to the helicopter companies and check-in for a short 30-45 minute helicopter tour. These tours are one of the most beautiful experiences in the world. They are short, sweet, and, most of all, memorable making. A 9 a.m. departure should bring you back to Lihue airport well before 10 a.m. - enough time to rent a car and take the hour drive up to Hanalei, the most beautiful part of the island.

Car rentals can be booked along with your inter-island flights, or rented upon arrival at their airport locations.

Upon leaving the airport turn right at the intersection and continue up the highway, making stops along the way for refreshment, or just for curiosity's sake, but don't stop too often, because there's more up ahead and you can definitely, stop on your way back to the airport.

Once in Hanalei, sign up for a Na Pali rafting trip. Take the shortest one offered, since these trips are also spectacular and magnificent, the longer ones can make for a tiring day. So, here again, keep it short and sweet so you will have energy to burn later in the day.

After your rafting trip is a perfect time for a late lunch and some shopping. Choose among the several wonderful restaurants in the area or wander back down toward the airport to Kapaa or the numerous other shopping areas in Princeville or Lihue. While in Kapaa, take a side trip to view Wailua falls or the Fern Grotto if you like, and when you are through, proceed to the airport for your short flight back.
