Most travelers will choose one or two of islands to spend their vacations on and therefore, fail to enjoy the features of the others. There is a way to solve this: consider the inter-island day trip! It is one of the most overlooked ways to enjoy yet another island without having to repack your bags.
Two inter-island carriers operate flights daily from 5:30 a.m. until about 8:30 p.m. Flights are offered to the major islands several times an hour and range in length from 30 minutes to 40 minutes one-way depending on your destination. This makes a day trip to the outer-islands most workable. Book a flight that leaves about eight or nine in the morning with return flights around six or seven in the evening. This will allow you to siightsee, have lunch and even enjoying a special activity or two before returning to your hotel for the evening. This works especially well on Kauai where you can easily board a helicopter trip less than 100 yards from your inter-island flight arrival gate. On The Big Island, this is especially convenient way to visit Volcano National Park.
Since inter-island flights are operated in a shuttle fashion, it makes coming and going quite easy and hassle-free. When booking your return flight, choose a flight as late in the day as possible, since if you find that you are ready to return earlier in the day, you can simply call the airline, or just present yourself at the airport and ask for the next available flight back.
So, take the time to consider a day trip to another island. It's a great way to get more out of your vacation.
A hui hou!
