Dover, DE --- Card Trick Hanover became the sixth supplement to win a Dover Downs Grand Circuit event this month, winning the $216,738 Matron Three-Year-Old Filly Pace on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Luc Ouellette, driving Card Trick Hanover, enjoyed a perfect trip stalking race-favorite Cathedra Dot Com until the stretch before moving along the passing lane to score a 1:533 victory.

Driver Dave Miller shot Cathedra Dot Com away from the starting gate and led a stellar field of eight fast females cutting out fractions of :263 to the quarter, a :562 half and 1:251 for three-quarters. Give Me Life made a strong bid on the backstretch for John Campbell but could get no closer than a length. The rest of the field stacked up turning for the stretch drive.

Cathedra Dot Com was still strong down the lane, but Ouellette urged his unused filly along the inside and flew past Cathedra Dot Com in the closing strides to victory. Gothic Lady, driven by Mike Lachance, finished third. Give Me Life was fourth with Pleasure Chest (Ross Wolfenden) fifth, the final purse paying position.

"When I warmed her up I sensed she had quick speed," revealed winning driver Ouellette. "My thoughts were to be up close where she could use it best. In the lane she was full of pace."

Card Trick Hanover, unraced at two, was purchased by Dan and Shaun MacIsaac, who already owned an interest in the filly, with Gene Fewster and Mardon Stable, before the current racing season.

"She showed a lot of speed," smiled trainer Bruce MacDonald, a disciple of prominent Ontario-trainer Ben Wallace. "She was very green at first, but she has matured very fast while racing."

This is the last race this season for the winner of 10 races and $294,539 in 2001. The daughter of Cam's Card Shark was a $25,000 supplement that turned out to be an excellent investment with a $176,170 return.

Ouellette showed again he has a way with the ladies. This was his second Matron winner this year; the other was Bonny Lynn, the two-year-old filly champion.

On a strong undercard, in the $22,000 Mares Open/Handicap, Roses Best, last season's Dover Downs Horse of the Meet returned to top form.

Owner-trainer-driver Toby Lynch, Jr. took the five-year-old Cambest filly right to the front and was never threatened in a 1:522 victory, bettering her own track record set last season by one-fifth of a second. Blue Sky (Ouellette) won a close photo for second with Saphire Skipper (Kevin Sizer) third.
