Northfield, OH --- Walter Case, Jr. picked up the 10,000th win of his sensational driving career in Friday's ninth race at Northfield Park. With the victory behind pacing mare Millway Susie, Case joined Herve Filion as the only drivers in North American harness racing history to reach the 10,000 win milestone.
The 40-year-old Case, a native of Lewiston, Maine, also leads all drivers in North America with 682 triumphs in the 2001 season. He also holds the all-time single season record for driving victories, with 1,076 in 1998. Case still trails the sport's all-time top driver Herve Filion by nearly 5,000 victories, as the Quebec native visited the winner's circle an astounding 14,783 times during his career. The 61-year-old Filion has not driven for several seasons. Germany's Heinz Wewering is poised to surpass Filion's total sometime next year. When asked about his chances of catching Filion and Wewering, the mud-covered Case replied, "I'm only worried about number 10,001 right now, these last few wins have been tough to come by." He went on to say "catching Filion is my ultimate goal in the sport" and that "in harness racing a number of drivers have driven successfully well into their 50's and God willing if I can remain healthy I hope to do the same." He also tipped his hat to Herve Filion, whom he drove against many times on the East Coast, saying "It's hard to believe that with 10,000 wins I'm barely two-thirds of the way to catching Herve. He was an extremely talented driver who accomplished a lot in his career." He went onto thank his parents, who were watching the Northfield simulcast at an Off-Track Betting parlor in Lewiston, Maine, for giving him his start in racing. Go To Page: 1
