January 25, 2000 Courtesy of Hoof Beats Moni Maker had to be used hard to overcome a handicap at the start of the Premio Omsk in Rome, Italy, on Monday and she finished fourth in the field of 18 starters.
Moni Maker was assigned an 80-meter handicap in the field, and the race was delayed by three recalls as officials tried to get the standing start organized. Once the race began, Moni Maker fell about 100 meters, or more than a football field in length, behind the field.
She then showed tremendous speed in catching the field, but was forced four-wide through the third of four turns. The effort took its toll on the big Speedy Crown mare, however, as she tired and finished fourth behind Titan Dra, a son of Napoletano.
Johnny Takter drove Moni Maker, who was heavily favored despite the huge handicap.
Moni Maker will soon be leaving Italy to contest the Prix de France at Vincennes on Feb. 6. That race is contested over 2,100 meters and will be started with a mobile gate.
