"Because she…I didn’t see her…”

"She did. You was just too stubborn to see. You get that from our side of the family. But you also have courage and strength to get pass this and become a woman that accepts responsibility. Stop blaming those that love you. Make choices that represent your present conditions.

You cannot afford to live and support yourself singing the blues. But you can get an education that would be backed by your father with no worry of money and with a good decent place to live. Many colored girls don't even have that option. Child you are blessed.

I came way down here to put some sense in your head after your mother informed me you weren't speaking to her. Your mother loves you. Don’t turn your back on her."

I nodded as the sweet and comforting words of my nana entered my mind, heart and soul. I breathe in the country air and let it mix with my disturbed, betrayed, and troubled self. I exhaled the substances that were holding me back to embrace my mother. I could feel my heart relaxing to a new beat. My heart was at ease.

I looked over to my nana. She was watching me closely. I walked over to the round table and picked up the receiver to the black phone. The operator came on. I said a number and a city. The operator asked who would I like to say is calling.

"Say it is her daughter, the one that still loves her.”
