Mahogany (Episode 1)


Sanderson and Mr. Williams. They are here in Harlem for a meeting of the National Urban League and for the first planned publication of the Opportunity."

"How you gentlemen doing?" Jewels and Bertha said so lovely together, as a chorus line on cue.

"Is there anything we can get for you all?" Bertha charmed.

They shook their heads but Bill interceded, "Yes, some coffee and your famous cinnamon bread."

Bertha gave her husband a sensuous smile, "I'll have it brought up."

The men were about to walk through the double doors leading upstairs to Bill's office when Jewels ran in front of her father.

"Daddy, I need to umm....speak to you...it is of importance."

His facial expression was slightly disturbed but then couldn't help to melt slowly as he looked into Jewels eyes.

"We will talk Jewels...I have to meet with these men first."

Jewels let out a disappointed sigh, "Alright daddy, just don't forget."

He touched her cheek affectionate before walking passed her as the two men followed.

Bertha was staring at her daughter, "Jewels, did I not say for you to not get your heart soley set on it?"

"But mother, this is what I want and need in my life right now."

"Next year will be more pleasing to your father then now, have you thought about that?"

Jewels was about to plead her case when all of a sudden Tony Banders, a close friend of her fathers but of the same age of Jewels, came rushing in knocking over stacks of crates near the entrance way.

"Where is Mr. Sands? I need to catcha him...you know where--"

"Calm down child."

"Yes, mam." His breathing still hard.

Tony un-button his shirt to relieve some tension his eyes expressed, in which, exposing his childhood scar near his throat. Tony explained it was from a childhood injury when his family lived down South. But the rumor was a possible lynching attempt and some how he escaped, out of respect, none of his friends pried. His deep brown hair was cut close to his nape that somehow didn't overshadow his brownish red skin tone which was like fall leaves.

Bertha called out to Bobby in the washer room to get her husband as Tony began to pace back and forth. The kitchen phone rang; Jewels went to answer it and as she placed her hand on the receiver - within seconds Tony placed his hands over hers.

"Tony, let go
