Overcome has been on the Christian metal scene since I was introduced to it a few years ago just as Stavesacre's ABSOLUTE album was surfacing. At the time, they were the most amazing thing my virgin ears had ever witnessed. WHEN BEAUTY DIES was an amazing hardcore album and was a sound I was not familiar with prior to that. I've waited years for their third release, IMMORTAL UNTIL THEIR WORK IS DONE, which was released by Facedown Records (their other two albums were on TOOTH & NAIL).
Albums that take this long to surface are sometimes disappointing to a certain point. IMMORTAL is no different. It contains riffs that make you want to move and the drums are heavy and upfront as they have always been, but the album lacks something their earlier material possessed. Whether it's a passion for what they're doing, a determination to tweak it in the studio until it was perfect, or just dwindling efforts, IMMORTAL isn't as constantly mosh-worthy as their earlier albums. This is revealed from the first track, "House of Cards," which starts out rather uninventive, but does sneak a tight minute in with a great riff fit to move even the most numb hardcore fan. I don't want to go so far as to say the album is unworthy. It still introduces tight rhythms intertwined with heartfelt lyrics occasionally, but it's not as constant as earlier efforts. If you can find the album (a feat in itself), you may want to consider buying it. After all, it is their last. Overcome, as of the release of this album and perhaps a supporting tour, are no more. But their music will live on, IMMORTAL just as this album's title suggests. Go To Page: 1
