Wyrick debuted as a single-performer industrial act in 1998 with "Mental Floss." But a year later, Travis Wyrick has returned with "Aggressive State...," a CD that moves in the direction that its title suggests.
The CD proves this fact with the first full-length track (seeing as the first is but thirty seconds of a techno groove), "More of You." "More of You" is a track concerning concerning what you say and do, and Wyrick's personal view on what you do being the largest sign of a Christian. What will you do to prove your love and devotion to God? Despite the positive, honest message, the track immediately signifies the harder approach this CD takes with its driving guitars, louder vocals, and heavy drums. The third track sounds familiar as though it originally appeared on his first (as there are two tracks from Wyrick's debut album on this one as remix versions), but it does wind up being an original track titled "Justify Your Sin." Message-wise, this is a great point about not being ashamed of your sin and trying to pretend it never happened by just turning away, but to turn to God, confess to your sin, and wash it away with pleas of forgiveness and offered praise. While the verses of this song may be similar to those from the original album with industrial beats a canopy for his soft vocals, the chorus comes in with aggressive rock much like the song before it. The fourth track, "Inside Out," is a really catchy tune, particularly in its chorus. It's a fine addition to the album that seems to be batting 1.000 as it heads for the next track, "Down (remix)." A remix of the song "Down" that appeared on Wyrick's debut effort, I now realize why he added it to this CD. The remix is extremely well done (unlike many remixes I hear) and revives the song so that the original version is detectable, and yet it sounds like a new song. With general remix practices of record-skipping vocals, adding additional beats, and echoing individual tracks, "Down (remix)" is one of the treasures of this sophomore CD. "Second Coming," the sixth track, starts off with a really tight guitar line but then shocks the listener with Wyrick's first attempt at rap. While he may not be altogether successful and it seems like a waste of a perfectly awesome guitar line, the song tightens up considerably during the chorus. Go To Page: 1 2
