Spring 2002 New Product Reviews

Spring is a busy time in the haircare world, a time when manufacturers unveil their newest concoctions and inventions. Spring is the time for new beginnings, fresh starts, and renewal. Renewal not only of the natural sort, but a time for personal renewal as well. If you feel it's time to make a change in your haircare regimen, Spring 2002 promises a plethora of exciting new products from all of your favorite manufacturers. Here are some of the products that I've been experimenting with lately.

The most exciting products for this spring come from Graham Webb. After the launch of their disappointing Brit Style line last year, Graham Webb bounces back with the Nolita hair care collection. The Nolita line strives to capture the sophisticated, trendy, yet edgy looks of New York City. The best product in the line appears to be Grit Gel, which is used to create the "beach hair" look. Other products include Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner, Molding Clay, and Hair Spray. All Nolita products contain Venuceane, a deep-sea byproduct of bacterial fermentation found in the Pacific Ocean. Venuceane is purported to have amazing anti-oxidantal properties.

ISO Multiplicity Swax is a spray wax used to create a variety of effects on the hair. Swax can be used to smoothe and polish straight hair or can be used to add definition to curly hair. Waxes have a minimal degree of hold, so they are ideal for those who dislike stiffness caused by most styling products. Waxes also help prevent frizz.

Artec Textureline Magnifier is a new blowdrying lotion which can be used on wet or damp hair. Magnifier adds texture as well as hold, so it not only keeps the style in place but also makes the hair appear fuller and thicker. Magnifier is a nice change from mousses and gels, and it just may be the change in your haircare regimen that you've been looking for.

Sebastian Dirty Workx isn't really a new product (it hit the shelves last year), but it's taken me a rather long time to evaluate it. Dirty Workx claims to be a conditioning styler, so it can be rinsed out like a daily conditioner, or used as a styling product. I found it to be a disapointment in both regards. It is not really a strong conditioner, it has no detangling ability, and it is awkward to work with. Dirty Workx is gray in color, and somewhat gritty in consistency. It almost feels like very wet clay or wet cement. As a styling product, it leaves hair looking dull and without sheen. It does not provide a firm hold, and quite honestly you could achieve the same result by dipping your head in a mud puddle.
