So You Want to be a Hairstylist

Every state has different licensing requirements, usually based on hours of school attendance. Pennsylvania, for instance, requires around 1300 hours of education before you can take the exam. The exam itself is usually divided into two separate tests; a written test and a practical test. Most states make you take the written exam first. If you pass, then you need to bring a live model for the practical exam.

Once you have the license, you aren't limited to being just a hairstylist. Other jobs in the beauty industry include make-up artist, nail technician, esthetician (skin care experts who perform facials, massage, etc.), teacher, and salon manager and owner. There are also many artistic opportunities, you can travel from city to city working on photoshoots, or working backstage at runway shows. There are also numerous trade shows. Platform artists are hairstylists who get on stage at the trade shows and demonstrate and unveil the newest designs. They travel around the world and educate other hairstylists. There are also numerous competitions, such as the North American Hairstyling Awards and the Alternative Hair Show. There are tons of different job opportunities open to a licensed stylist. Some hairstylists work in nursing homes or hospitals, some work in hair-loss clinics. Some work in hotels or on cruise ships. Some open their own shop in their own homes and set their own hours. Some work on movie sets and in television studios. There are limitless possibilities in this wonderful profession. If you are unsure of what career path to take, consider cosmetology.

I'd like to close this week by extending my heartfelt sympathy to the families and friends and victims of the terrorist attacks that recently befell our nation. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
