So You Want to be a Hairstylist

Years ago, people viewed the profession of hairdressing as a lowly profession, an industry for women who didn't have the money or intelligence to go to a regular university. It is sad that some people still look down on the profession, and fail to give hairdressers the respect they deserve. Ours is a profession that deals with science, chemistry, anatomy, biology, art, and marketing on a daily basis. Ours is an industry of service, and an industry of creativity. It is also an industry of care-giving. Hairstylists have the power to make people feel good about themselves. We have the opportunity on a daily basis to take people with low self-esteem and build them up, to increase their confidence and make them feel like a million dollars. That's a wonderful thing.

For those who don't follow our profession, they may be surprised to learn that there is a major shortage of beauty professionals. This is bad news for salon owners looking for new talent, but this is great news for high-school students who aren't sure about what kind of profession to get into. There is tremendous earning potential, and a great sense of personal satisfaction at the end of the day when you are employed in this industry.

The first step is to find a beauty school. This is perhaps the most important thing. A sound education is the foundation of any career. Some people opt to study cosmetology in high schools that offer technical and vocational programs. I recommend waiting until after high school to pursue a career in this field because it requires alot of maturity. We learn so many different aspects, from studying the chemicals used in coloring, to learning how to identify diseases and disorders of the skin, scalp, and nails. All of this learning can be overwhelming to many people, so I recommend attending an accredited cosmetology school that offers a well-rounded curriculum that deals with hair, skin, and nails.

Beauty school should take around a year to complete if you attend every day. Add on another six months if you want to pursue getting your teaching license. beauty school is usually divided into two phases. The first phase is classroom study, which deals with working on mannequins and fellow sudents. After a few months in the classroom, you begin phase two, which is working on actual clients. The classroom study prepares students for working on real people, and also prepares students for the state board examinations.
