Thinning Hair

Hair loss isn't something confined to men. Women can also experience hair loss, although women with this condition may feel too embarassed to openly discuss it. Hair loss is easily treated in the early stages, but it is important to discuss it with your hairstylist.

How much hair loss is normal? The body is in a constant state of renewal, old hair falls out and is replaced by new hair. On the average, a person loses up to 250 strands of hair throughout the day, mostly during sleep or in the shower. Some people are alarmed to see hair in their drains or on their pillows; this doesn't necessarily mean that the person is going bald, perhaps the person never noticed that they were shedding hair.

Losing hair in clumps, however, is not normal. Irregular hair loss occurs rapidly, unlike hereditary hair loss, which occurs gradually over the course of years. Irregular hair loss should be treated by a physician, as it may indicate a more specific medical condition (such as alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, or postpartum alopecia). If you have thinning hair, I recommend using soft-bristle brushes or wide-tooth combs when working on your hair. Blow-dry using low heat, as this will help prevent breakage, which can make thinning hair look even worse.

Some other tips for disguising hair loss are side parts (instead of center parts), curling iron sets, highlights, or perms. Hair loss is less noticible on hair that is very curly and lighter in color. For men, apply pomade or dressing wax to dry hair and wear it messy. Avoid combing the hair back or to the side, this will reveal, rather than disguise, thinning hair or a receding hairline.

Wigs and hairpieces are also an alternative, but should be used as a last resort. Wigs will deprive the scalp of oxygen and sunlight, speeding up the balding process. Many specialists believe that even hats may contribute to hair loss, if worn regularly for long periods of time.

Minoxidil works for most people, the only drawback is that it must be used every day. Once you stop using it, the hair that grew back will fall out rapidly. Also keep in mind that you can purchase generic minoxidil for almost half as much as Rogaine. They also make extra-strength minoxidil, though it is not recommended for women.

There are many shampoos made to treat thinning hair. I like VitaTress by Nexxus. Nexxus also makes Diametress, which is another great shampoo for thinning hair. American Crew has a thickening shampoo, but is mainly geared towards male clients.
