I find as a hairstylist, I get asked the same questions all the time. Men and women generally have the same concerns, and I'll try my best to offer insight based on personal experience. Keep in mind that there are often many solutions to a question, so my answers may not be the only solution.
1. What causes split ends and how can I get rid of them? The condition known as split ends, technically known as trichoptilosis, occurs when the hair has been stressed too much and the stress frays the ends of the hairstrand. Common causes of trichoptilosis include damage from heat styling, bleaching, coloring, and use of inferior haircare products. Although some products claim to repair split ends, this just isn't true. The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off. 2. How can I make my hair grow faster? Hair, on average, grows up to 1/2 inch per month, and there aren't many things a person can do to increase that number. However, there are things you can do to ensure steady hair growth. Frequent trimming is the most important. Get the ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks to avoid getting split ends, which can halt hair growth. Nutrition is also important. A lack of nutrients can slow down hair growth. Taking a multi-vitamin supplement may help your hair grow faster. Adequate sleep helps as well, since sleep helps regulate hormone levels. 3. Is it normal to shed hair? Yes. The average person sheds up to 200 hairs a day. The hair is constantly replacing itself through most of a person's life. The hair growth cycle consists of three phases: growth, fall-out, and re-growth. Shedding occurs at the fall-out stage, and prepares the follicle for the regrowth stage. If you feel your hair loss is abnormal or accelerated, consult a dermatologist or physician. 4. How can I remove cigarette smoke odors from my hair? Shampoo your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoos deep clean the hair, removing buildup caused by styling products, smoke, pollution, chlorine, hard water, well water, or any odors embedded in the hair. A good clarifying shampoo should be gentle enough for colored hair, although many can strip haircolor and cause fading. Artec makes a great shampoo, Textureline Daily Clarifying Shampoo, which is safe to use on colored or permed hair. 5. What hairstyles will make a round face look thinner?
