Body-building for Hair

One of the biggest complaints clients have is that their hair is limp, fine, and doesn't have enough body. They come to the salon frustrated, because they can't achieve the same results at home as they get in the salon. Many of them feel they are doomed to have lifeless and flat hair, and many of them think there must be some magic trick we use to give the hair body. The truth is, no matter how fine your hair is, there are a few simple techniques that professionals use, and with a little practice you can "pump up the volume" at home the same way we do in the salon.

Body and volume are words that basically refer to the same thing, but are often misunderstood. Body and volume refer to hair that has "lift" in the root area, making each individual strand appear to stand up from the scalp rather than lying down flat against it. It is easier to give volume to thicker hair, as the increased diameter of the strand provide it with the support strength necessary to stand up from the scalp.

Although thicker hair is easier to style, there are a number of ways to style, cut, and even color fine hair to give it the appearance of added body.

If you feel you have fine or thin hair but aren't sure, here's a quick way to find out. Brush back all your hair and hold it in your hand in a ponytail. Normal hair should have the circumference of larger than a quarter. If it is less, then you technically have fine hair.

Some people with fine hair are afraid that they will lose their hair as they get older, which may or may not be true, since genetics play the biggest part in hair loss. But as people age, their hair will only get thinner and finer, seldom does hair ever get thicker with age, although it does happen occasionally. People with fine hair don't necessarily have less hair on their head, it's just that each individual hair is fine.

One way to help remedy this problem is to use a hair thickening shampoo and conditioner. Hair is fine because it often lacks the nutrients and chemical bonds inside the cortex (middle layer) of the hair that give it thickness and diameter. Many shampoos infuse the hair wih these nutrients, and over time will make the hair thicker and fuller. If fine or thinning hair is a problem, try the VitaTress system by Nexxus. The system is made up of a shampoo, a cysteine conditioner (cystiene bonds in the hair give it thickness), and a full line of styling products. I've worked with these products alot, and have seen some undisputable results.
