Success in styling your own hair can only be achieved if you use the products that are right for your hair type. The perfect hairstyle comes from the culmination of the perfect products, but how do you know what to use without dropping a ton of money at your hair salon? This guide will answer all your questions, and I'll recommend the products you need to get the look you want.
A: You need to start with a good shampoo, because the key to creating a work of art is all in how you prepare the canvas. In your case, I would use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove any buildup. Even the lightest holding hairspray can coat and weigh down fine hair. Clarifying shampoo will prevent any buildup from styling products, chlorine, or mineral deposits. I recommend Alternate Action shampoo, which is made by Matrix and is readily available in most salons. Unless your hair is damaged, avoid conditioners, because they will weigh down your hair. Buy a good detangling spray or leave-in conditioner, such as Instacure (also by Matrix). When it comes to styling, nothing will outperform a mousse. Try KMS Amp Volume mousse. It's alcohol-free and has a very pleasing scent. This should be the mainstay of your haircare products, because gels, pomades, and waxes will all make your hair greasier than a mechanic's overalls. Now invest in a high-quality moisturizing shampoo. KMS Silker will do the trick. Shampoo every three days, but condition every other day with Silker Reconstructer, which is an amazing conditioner. If you've experienced breakage, try something a little heavier, like Nexxus Keraphix. Avoid styling products that contain alcohol, which will dry out your hair even more.
