Finding Beauty WithinI get to meet alot of people being a hairstylist. Some are young, some are old, some are loud and outgoing, and some are quiet and timid. It is this never-ending stream of people that makes my job so interesting. One minute, you can be trimming the bangs of a schoolteacher, the next minute cutting the hair of the mayor, and before the day is through you've had conversations with writers, truck drivers, dairy farmers, lawyers, actors, musicians and cross-dressing bi-racial lobster fishermen. And all of these people, as varied and diverse as they are, have one common goal; which is for me to make them beautiful. Beauty is everywhere, and it is my conclusion that every single person is beautiful. Some people's beauty is on the surface for all the world to see. Most people could use a little help bringing that beauty to the surface, which is where I come in. I have yet to meet a person who lacked beauty completely. Some people have it in their eyes, or in their smiles, or in their voices. For some people, it's nowhere near the surface of the skin, but it resides deep within the soul. This is true beauty; not the store-bought kind. Anyone with a wallet full of money could hire a team of stylists and make-up artists to make them look good. But there is the kind of beauty that no amount of money can buy, and bringing that out in people is the best part of my job. But how does one go about turning inner beauty into something visible? It all has to start with confirmation. Everyone should be able to look into the mirror and like what they see. If you don't like what you see, remember that that can be changed. It is amazing how a new haircut or haircolor can radically change a person's perception of themself. A great hairstyle can give a person confidence that he or she never knew they had. I've seen people who were clinically depressed get a makeover and they became well again. The power of confidence and self-esteem should never be underestimated. If a person believes he or she is beautiful, then they actually do become beautiful. I've witnessed this enough times for myself to know that it's true. Sometimes a person can't look in the mirror and like what they see. They need confirmation too, but from a different person. One single compliment can change a person's entire life. I make it a point to tell the plain-janes and the average woman-next-door that they are really beautiful. They need to hear it because they aren't told often enough. I know that these compliments work when I see these women a few eeeks later, walking with their heads held high and with a new sense of self-esteem and confidence. And believe it or not, after they themselves believe in their own beauty, they truly do become beautiful
