Daily Lesson Plans: Upper Elementary Grades

rectangle...the rectangle looks like it's hanging down off the side of the triangle..." and so on.

6. As they finish, have everyone cover their creation with the file folder. Take a look at them as a class to see which group(s) had the most accurate duplicates.

Lesson Three: Math/Language Arts

Students will create new words by joining together fractional parts of other words. For example: 1/3 of "for" plus ½ of "four"=fur.

Supplies:

Transparency, poster, or photocopies of word problems found at http://www.lessonplanspage.com/MathFract...

Overhead projector (if using transparency).

1 sheet of paper per student (unless providing them with photocopies of the word problems)

1 pencil per student

Directions:

1. Have students get out paper and pencil, or pass out photocopies.

2. Demonstrate how to do the first problem, either on the overhead or on the chalkboard.

3. This can be assigned as either a timed or untimed activity. If timed, you may want to offer some incentive to the first done, most correct answers, etc.

Lesson Four: Social Studies/Language Arts

Students will write either words or sentences using the Inuit (commonly referred to as Eskimo) "alphabet".

Supplies:

Seven copies of the Inuit symbols found at http://www.halfmoon.org/inuit.html

A piece of paper for each student

A pencil or pen for each student

Directions:

1. In advance, review the information found at the website listed in "Supplies". Photocopy the symbols chart.

2. Divide students into groups of four or so. Students will be sharing symbols charts, so have students arrange themselves appropriately.

3. Provide background to students about the Inuit way of writing. Emphasize that because English and Inuit are not the same language, each has letters and sounds that are not found in the other. This makes it impossible for us to translate English words letter for letter, but we can still have fun trying.

4. Have students write something using the symbols handout. First, have them write out the word, sentence or phrase in English; then, they will translate it into Inuit as closely as possible.

5. Have students share their work with one another.

Lesson Five: Science

Students will use deductive reasoning to solve a science challenge.

Supplies:

1 can of Coke

1 can of Diet Coke

1 bucket of water (large enough to float the cans of pop)

Directions:

1. Put the bucket of water somewhere safe.

2. Have students gather around the bucket. Show them the pop cans, ask a couple of students to confirm they are just normal cans of pop and that they have not been opened.

3. Put both cans into the bucket of water. Instruct students to watch what happens.
