Starting to Live a Spiritual Life in a Non Spiritual World

Oct 7, 2001 - © Baruch Weiner

Roof of Branches
. In the succah we are protected above with just some branches, through which we can see the stars. This ingrains within us that only G-d is really protecting us - not our homes and physical possessions. By putting our trust in G-d, we will begin to see His hand more and more in our lives. His divine providence watches over each and every individual of His nation. Anyone who looks and notices will see in his or her life how they have been guided and saved again and again. We can see this is in everyday small things and in greater life issues.

Even somone whom reads this after Succot or does not yet have a Succah in their life can benefit from part of the lesson by at least thinking about this most important idea.

Why do we Read the Book of Ecclesiastes
. During the Yom Tov (holiday) of Succoth we can all gain a little more strengthening of our spiritual side and rising above the usual getting caught up and lost in the mundane vanities of this world. We take a moment to ponder and think that since this is a temporary world, what can I do to best fulfill my stay here? It is because of this that we read the book of Ecclesiastes (Kohelet one of the holy books in the Tanach) written by King Solomon. This book talks about the vanity of this world.

The Tragic Lesson of the WTC
. Unfortuantly this year though we as well as the whole world got a quick painful lesson on just how transient is our. The tradegy of the Twin Towers and pentagon is a lesson to think about now durin succoth. Human success and prosperity can end so suddenly and tragically that this cannot be our pursuit into itself. There must be a higher purpose and meaning to our lives. Yes this may be a part of life the big and successful buildings and business but what is the purpose of it? Why am I working? What am I raising children for and for what purpose? To create corporate presidents and lawyers to [protect criminals and doctors to heal man inflicted wounds? Is there a way of living that can give more meaning to our entire life’s existence? Now is the time to think a little about this and make the needed adjustments in our outlook
