Marlie Finds A HomeThe following is a partial quote from ABAP's Special Needs Dogs: "Marlie is a wonderful two year old female who lost her tongue as a puppy due to a breeder using metal bowls during freezing weather... She needs a special home where she can have raised food and water bowls that are longer and deeper than most regular bowls to allow her easier access. She also needs a family that will love her despite her more than occasional drooling." This description ran for several months on ABAP with no response, but one day Marlie's destiny began to change. This special little girl had an angel looking out for her! Rhonda Hudson from Tacoma, Wash., was a newcomer on Greyhound-L. She had noticed posts regarding the forum on ABAP for Special Needs Dogs; one day she visited the site. She read about Marlie for the first time, and something about the story pulled at her heartstrings. However, Marlie and her friend Lea already had three dogs - two dalmatians and one greyhound. Three dogs, umm enough for anyone, right? Well, maybe not! The saga continues - six months went by before Rhonda found herself at Marlie's page again. There she was - still waiting. As we all know there is a special "feeling" that comes over us with certain greyhounds. That "feeling" hit Rhonda and Lea like a sledgehammer! They knew Marlie was meant for them. Thus began the correspondence between Tacoma and Tulsa. Friends of Greyhounds in Tulsa, Okla., and volunteers Mary Peace and Rochelle Morgan were the contacts for Marlie. Rhonda and Lea's adoption application passed with flying colors. Marlie had a home! A problem, of course, was evident - after all, the states of Oklahoma and Washington are not within walking distance! Once again, Marlie's angel was working overtime. Mary and Rochelle contacted Wings for Greyhounds, an organization began by Maggie McCurry and Mark Pettijohn. Maggie and Mark donate their time to fly dogs from racetracks or rescue organizations in California and Arizona to cities where dog tracks aren't common. (Please see my article on Wings.) Maggie and Mark just happened to be flying to Little Rock, Arkansas, in the near future to pick up a plane. Coincidence or Marlie's Angel - you decide! Flying from Little Rock to Tulsa was an easy hop for Wings. So, on Sunday, July 26, Marlie left Tulsa for her new home!(Marlie, black & white, Lea, and Stormy) The Internet is a wonderful place!
