TLC Broading and Adoption Kennel is in Solomon, Kansas, about 10 miles from Abilene. In July of 1996, Deb and Darrel Sanford were operating their boarding kennels. A greyhound farmer brought three greyhounds to them that needed a place to stay until they could find homes. From that one incident the TLC greyhound adoption program was born. In April of 1997, they incorporated and got their 501 C -3 status.
(lst picture shows some TLC grounds) (Second picture shows greyhounds - the white one with the yellow muzzle is my Whitney.) Deb's husband, Darrel, has a full time job elsewhere, but he is the official photographer for the web site. Deb takes care of the greyhounds, and also the boarding animals. She works from sun up to after the sun has gone down. She also goes on many GUR (Greyhound Underground Railroad) runs. When this happens, her sister Cheryl Werner fills in. But Cheryl's main job is the paperwork and bookkeeping, of which there is plenty! There are very few foster homes in Kansas, and even fewer adopters. So TLC's greys have to be moved out of the area, and in a state that houses the NGA, the Greyhound Hall of Fame, and at least 50 farms in their area, they get a lot of greyhounds that need homes. For example, to show the difference in how adoption groups run their operations, Greyhound Pets of America, in Tulsa, Okla. (the organization I am involved with), has around 10 foster homes (and we need lots more!). Our adoption area includes the entire state of Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle. There are many GPA chapters across the United States - and they usually adopt only in their respective areas. We all work together when needed to place greyhounds. In the case of TLC, they have no one but themselves and less than five foster homes. At any given moment, they can have as many as 15 greyhounds. You can see why GUR runs are a very important part of their program. For anyone who doesn't understand about the GUR, it simply means transporting Greyhounds across the country. With TLC's setup, the GUR is an essential plan for them. This is the reason the greyhound list is trying to get as many donations as possible for TLC. They seriously need a dog trailer. With the trailer, they could transport a greater number of greys. At our recent Abilene gathering, several TLC dogs were taken by list members to their individual states. That is how moving these greyhounds from place to place works - everyone doing their part in helping. Go To Page: 1 2
