My oldest granddaughter, Sierra, gave a short talk about greyhounds for a Science project this past week. She invited Whitney and I to her class so the kids could meet a greyhound in person. Of course, I jumped at this opportunity! Anytime I have the chance to promote education about greyhounds I take it! Sierra, a 12-year-old, is in the 6th grade. Several days before our planned visit I gave Sierra some literature about greyhounds so she could decide what she would say to her class.
As we entered the classroom, I ask Sierra's teacher, Mrs. Lovelace, if we could close the door so that I could take Whitney's leash off. As Sierra was talking to the class of about 30 young people, Whitney walked down each row of desks. She did this without any help from me. She would stop as each boy or girl petted her. When they were through she would move on to the next one. Finishing a row, she would then go to the next one. This was an amazing thing to watch. It was if she knew exactly what she was doing! When Sierra had completed her talk, Mrs. Lovelace suggested that we have a question and answer session. I was thrilled to do this, as I wanted to get as much greyhound information as possible in front of these kids. Remember, I said that this was a 6th grade class - comprised of 12- & 13-year-old kids. I was impressed! They asked very intelligent questions. One girl and her family owned AKC bulldogs, I believe, and she had several questions about the possibility of showing greyhounds. Another youngster inquired about the nicks and scars on Whitney's body.
