Al and the Demon Phone, A story by Gail HairI write about some rather serious subjects regarding greyhounds. Maybe I have been remiss in not showing the comical side of these wonderful dogs! The following incident actually happened. Gail is a good friend of mine whom I met because of my work with greyhounds. I have met her two greys, Martin and Al. They are beautiful, sweet, and funny boys! Try to picture this story in your mind as you are reading it I can promise you tears of laughter will be running down your face when you finish reading! Now, here is the completely true story of Al and the Demon Phone!
THE PHONE Living with three two-legged kids, one who is a teenager and two who want to be, the phone in our house gets lots of use. Since it is attached to a 100-foot cord, the phone gets moved from one spot to another. I am always reminding the kids to "keep the phone picked up," because if the cord touched one of the dog's legs, they might jump and start running, and someone could get hurt. I, on the other hand almost always use the wall phone in the kitchen. That phone has a 20-foot cord attached to the hand receiver and reaches almost no where. The dogs I am talking about are two beautiful greyhounds, Al and Martin. Al is a big boy at 87 pounds and Martin is almost as big at 80 pounds. Both dogs are as different as day and night. When we first got Al he was not scared, just cautious of everything. He made sure that what ever was around him was safe or he just wasn't going to be in the same room with it. This included stairs, mirrors, toys and people who moved to fast. Martin on the other hand was afraid of everything and lived behind our couch for at least six months. As both dogs settled in, Al became a brave young man who was afraid of nothing. Martin was glad to let Al be the "big man on campus," letting him always lead the way, knowing in his heart that this was the safest way to live in a house with "two-leggers"! One Friday a few months ago, I was talking on the phone and working in the kitchen, not really paying attention to what was going on around me. As I walked from one counter to another Al came in to get a drink of water
