Separation Anxiety

regardless of weather, is another helpful suggestion. A 30- to 45-minute brisk walk daily is good for you and your dog!

Anti-anxiety medication can also be used. Most owners try the other methods first, but if all else fails, the medications can be a lifesaver. This would be something to talk with your vet about.

If the separation anxiety is on the mild side, another pet might be the answer. In severe cases, adding another dog to your home will probably not do the trick.

An excellent article by Dr. Christine Welch can be found at ABAP. Another two articles found on the animalNet talks about dogs and cats. And another one can be found at the Canines of America site.

Before getting greyhounds, I was not even aware of the problem of separation anxiety in animals. Of course, I did know of it in children. In researching material for this article, I read several articles written for parents. I was amazed how similar (not literally, but in general) these articles were! I have never had a dog that showed the symptoms of S.A., but if I ever do I will at least have a fairly good idea of what I am dealing with. I hope this article and the links provided will be helpful to anyone dealing with this problem.
