The Greyhound Mailing ListThis week's article introduces the reader to a seriously addicting greyhound activity the greyhound mailing list! My friend Cheryl Holmberg, President of GPA/OK, told me about this list in December 1996. I had mentioned to her that I had recently become connected to the Internet, and I wanted to get a lot of mail. Remember how exciting it was to get e-mail when you were first learning about the Internet? Cheryl told me I would be really happy with the amount of mail I would get after joining Greyhound-L. She was right! I was so excited! I was getting lots of mail, and it was about one of my obsessions Greyhounds! During the past two years, I have subscribed to several other mailing lists. From Holistic Healing to Science Fiction and many points in between! These lists were interesting, but I eventually had to stop them because I would get behind on my greyhound mail! I have made so many new friends, although I know them only through their posts on Greyhound-L. It is amazing how close you can feel to people by just reading the words they write. I have also become acquainted with some remarkable animals! Not only greyhounds, dogs of many other breeds, and cats too! I have learned so much from the members on this list. I have participated in discussions about feeding, the famous greyhound gas, the big D (diarrhea - yes, really!), seizures, bloat, the best crate to purchase, where your greyhounds sleep, silly stories, sad stories, and many, many other things. I have agonized over lost greys, cried over greys who have died, laughed over the funny things that happen in a greyhound household. I have met Deuce, the greyhound who lost one of his legs to cancer, Turbo, the grey who signed his owners birthday card, one grey (can't remember the name) who ate a sock, and another who went on an early morning television show. I have become more knowledgeable about some very serious subjects such as racing vs. non-racing, separation anxiety, never letting your greyhound off lead, and on and on! There are approximately 700 members on this list now; many of them are lurkers, but some post daily and some post just occasionally. This is a great place to go for information. One lister wrote about their greyhound who had just been diagnosed with cancer she was feeling pretty low, but because of the response she got from the list her ordeal was made easier. For new greyhound owners, the list is an invaluable learning center.
