Halloween Dangers to Pets

My article this week applies to ALL animals, not just greyhounds! Halloween has long been one of my favorite holidays. I love all things spooky — Stephen King, scary movies, haunted houses! However, Halloween is not the safest holiday for cats and dogs! We should all refresh our memories on Halloween safety for our four-legged friends.

A Breed Apart has an article in the current issue warning pet owners of the dangers of Halloween. Some of the safety tips mentioned in the article include keeping pets away from the door when candy is being handed out, and keeping candy, especially chocolate, away from dogs.

As I was looking for other articles on this subject, I found an interesting site called Pets, Vets. You and Dr. Sue. Dr. Sue has a very educational site with all sorts of Pet facts. She also has one department called "Fun Facts" which is "fun" to look at! The section I was looking at for this article was found under the heading Fall & Winter Pet Care Tips.

The Acme Pet site also has a good article titled Take the danger Out of Your Pet's Halloween. Keeping your pets away from the open doors in again mentioned. If you have a crowd of little ghosts and goblins at your door, as you open the door to pass out candy, your cat or dog could easily slip out into the night. They could run in front of a car and be hurt or killed. Also mentioned are the dangers of candy. For example, many small candies come individually wrapped; if your pet eats the wrapper, it could cause an obstruction in the digestive system. So not only is keeping chocolate away from your dogs important, so is keeping the wrappers away from them! Actually, your dogs should not eat any candy to begin with — be on the safe side and keep your candy out of their reach.

Another article I found was on the Los Altos Town Crier site. This one touches another subject that all animal owners should be aware of. Cats, particularly black cats, are always in danger before Halloween. Some tricksters like to pull pranks with cats, and this can lead to injury, abuse, even death. We all know that cats have long been linked to witches and things spooky. There are instances where certain individuals use cats — black and white — for rituals of one kind or another. Most humane societies will not allow the adoption of black or white cats the week before or after Halloween. I know for years we have always been particularly careful with our cats during the entire month of October. It might also be noted that black or white dogs could also be in danger. Being careful with pets, whatever they are, is very important during this time of year!
