This week's article is another in the series of "On the Farm" stories by Oklahoma Greyhound Breeders, Sam & Shawnie Burdette. In fact the next two articles pertain to their new greyhound puppies. This week tells about the delivery.
"My KB" (My Unruly Dan-My Miss Vickie) and "Tigerman McGee" (My Bocephus-Judy Judy) wish to announce the birth of their litter of 8 black greyhound puppies born 6/16/97 between 6:40 AM and 5:30 PM. All eight puppies are solid black; four are males and four are females. Puppies ranged in weight from 15 oz to 19 oz at birth. This is the second litter of puppies for the seven year old solid black mother. It is also the second litter of puppies sired by the five year old brindle dad. Mother, puppies, and dad are doing fine. Godparents are Sam Burdette (Husband) and Shawnie Burdette (Wife). KB and Tigerman have consented to periodic postings to the GH Digest about the progress and antics of their puppies. As "My KB" approached the 63rd day from her breeding to "Tigerman McGee", wife paid extra attention to her. Two weeks prior to delivery wife increased KB's feed from 1.5 lbs per day to 3.0 lbs per day. Wife also supplemented KB's feed with Pet Tabs and Calcium Tablets each day. Wife isolated KB in a separate stall two weeks prior to delivery. The whelping box (5'x6') with runners of heavy duty carpet was placed in the air-conditioned food mixing room three days prior to delivery. KB was given a bath three days prior to delivery. Also, KB was allowed to stay in the mixing room after the whelping box was prepared. The day before delivery, KB refused to eat. At 6:15 AM on Monday, 6/16/97, (64 days after breeding) wife noticed KB having contractions. KB started having discharges and stronger contractions. Within a few minutes the first signs of the sack enclosed puppy appeared. Three contractions later the first puppy was entirely discharged. KB immediately started licking and tearing at the sack. She ate the sack, the placenta, and severed the cord. If you have not witnessed this birthing process, it is a mess. KB then repeatedly licked and cleaned the male puppy. The puppy started squirming and pawing. Wife picked up the puppy and dried him off. KB's ears went up and she watched wife intently. Wife baby-talked to KB and placed the puppy back near its mother. The puppy squirmed, pawed, rolled, and crawled to its mother's bosom. The puppy then latched onto its mother faucet and began nursing. Of course the puppy could not see or hear, Go To Page: 1 2
