The Story of Rosemary & SageDuring the summer of 1998, a story surfaced on the Internet that really pulled at my heartstrings. As animal lovers we all dread the time when our 4-legged friends become ill or hurt. The reality is that usually they leave this world before we do. The story that I am going to tell you now is the other way around. Kristie Hett adopted two greyhounds named Rosemary and Sage around six years ago. First she adopted Rosemary, and then a year later she brought Sage into her heart and home. Sometime during the past year Kristie was made aware of her own mortality. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer. After considerable talking with her doctor and much soul searching, I'm sure, Kristie came to the conclusion that she had to find new homes for her greyhounds. Her story hit the Internet, and as has happened in other cases, the story spread like wildfire! I first saw her story on a site called The Poop but the story appeared many more places. It ended up, of course, on the Greyhound-List. I have heard that other dog breeds have followers that stick together, and I'm sure that is true. However, I only have knowledge of greyhound people, and I can tell you that they go to great lengths to help other greyhound people. Greyhound Adoption Service in Salisbury, Massachusetts, because of their close proximity to Kristine, took on the task of finding a new home for these two greyhounds. They probably first thought that a home could be found for these two in their area. Kristie had requested that they be adopted together if at all possible. But, destiny moves in its own way, and before long a lady in Racine, Wisconsin, felt drawn to this story. Nancy Moresco read their story, and decided that these dogs belonged in her family. Nancy knew lots about greyhounds, having 3 of her own at that time. So began the trip of 1,100 miles and the Greyhound Underground Railroad (GUR) once again came to the rescue. Nancy has put the entire GUR together on a web site. Please visit Rosemary & Sage's Trip and read all about their journey to their new home. Rosemary and Sage joined the Moresco home which includes, at last count: greyhounds Foxy, Patty, Rusty, Buddy, and now Rosemary & Sage; also in the home are 2 Italian greyhounds, Dennis the Menace and Mr. Wilson, then there is Scruffy, a Cairn Mix, and Tutu the 13-year-old Westie, and let's not forget Cody the bird! This is a house with more animals than even I have! Nancy tells me that both dogs are adjusting to life in their new home. According to Nancy, Rosemary is a very happy girl - one of those greyhounds that smile a lot! Sage is the quieter of the two - Nancy calls him one of her "Velcro hounds." She believes he misses Kristie the most. But he is beginning the process of learning to play, and he greets Nancy at the door each evening with one of those greyhound body slams! So, all in all both dogs are doing well in their new home. Nancy had Rosemary and Sage about a month before Kristie's death. Nancy sent her one of the stuffed greyhounds from Target. In keeping with the spice theme, Kristie named her stuffed greyhound Basil, and Kristie's sister told Nancy that they both cried when Basil arrived. Penny, Kristie's sister, now cherishes Basil as a remembrance of Kristie.
