Dec 22, 1998
This time of year we are busy cooking up those Christmas goodies for our family and friends. Sweet aromas fill the house and make our tummies talk! Have you ever noticed that our Greyhounds seem to notice those smells? Mine follow me around with a wistful look on their face. And Yes, I can interpret these looks very clearly! You all know how expressive these Greyhounds can be! Below are some recipes for Greyhound Christmas treats. I hope all of you take time to fix your needlenoses some good stuff this holiday season! (I am grinning as I type this! I know you all are as busy as I am, but I'm thinking my Grandkids & I could do this project together!) I don't know what these are called, but they came from the Greyhound list. Let's call them "Crunchy Bones"
1 1/2 cups flour ---- 1/2 cup water
3/4 C uncooked oatmeal---- 1/4 C honey crunch wheat germ
1/4 C smooth/chunky peanut butter---- 1/4 C salad oil
1/4 C honey---- 1 tsp baking powder
Mix 1 Cup flour & 1/2 Cup water with remaining ingredients until well blended. Stir in remaining 1/2 C flour. Knead on well-floured surface until dough holds together. Roll out to 1/4"
Thick. Cut as many bones as possible. Re-roll scraps & use until gone. Bake on large ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Turn off oven, but leave cookie sheet in for 1 hour. Remove cookies to wire rack. BISCUITS FOR DOGS
1 3/4 Cups canned dog food (2 16oz cans)
1 C unprocessed bran---- 1 C old-fashioned oatmeal
1/2 vegetable oil
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. In medium bowl, mash dog food & remove all lumps. Mix in bran & oatmeal. Slowly add oil, mixing to a consistency that is easy to mold into patties, or roll & cut into bone shapes. Add more oil if mixture is too dry.
Arrange biscuits on ungreased baking sheet & bake 3 1/2 hours, or until hard. Cool; store in a covered canister. If refrigerated, treats will keep for about 1 month. Makes 16 Medium size biscuits. ACE'S FAVORITE CHEESY DOG BISCUITS
1 1/2 c whole wheat flour---- 1 1/4 C grated cheddar cheese
1/4 lb. corn oil margarine---- 1 clove garlic, crushed
Pinch of salt---- milk
Grate the cheese & let stand until it reaches room temperature. Cream the cheese with the softened margarine, garlic, salt & flour. Add enough milk to form into a ball.
Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll onto floured board. Cut into shapes & bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown, & firm. Makes 2 to 3 dozen.
