Licorice, one of KB's Pups

In August of 1997 Pete and I made a trip to Sam & Shawnie Burdette's farm in Keota, OK. We were picking up a Greyhound named Dodie to be put into our adoption program in Tulsa. While there we were privileged to meet KB and her 8 puppies. Sam & Shawnie were writing a series of articles about this litter on Greyhound-L. I re-printed, with permission from the Burdette's, the articles on this site. The first article http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/grey... begins on July 8, 1997. If you are a new reader to my Greyhound section of Suite 101, you would enjoy going back and reading these articles. Well, back to my story! Pete and I had never seen Greyhound puppies before, so we were thrilled to be able to hold, cuddle, and watch these little guys for an afternoon. When we left the farm that day, Pete said to me, "Some day we are going to have one of these puppies!"

In October of 1998, GPA/OK brought 5 Burdette dogs into our adoption program. One of these was Licorice, the first of KB's puppies to be given to us. Licorice refused to run when he came out of the starting gate. Knowing what I know now, I think he was simply too nosy to run - he wanted to examine everything in sight! But back to the day we brought these 5 in - our first stop was my house for cat checking, baths, pictures, and recording of tattoos. Pete said that he thought we should foster Licorice. I knew right then we were in for trouble! Keep in mind that this is a Greyhound puppy at 15 months! Pete & I are in our 50's and had always liked the older Greys! Within 24 hours, Pete made the comment to me that he "doubted" that Licorice would ever leave our house!

It is now the middle of November and indeed, Licorice has never left our house! The adoption is complete! Needless to say, we fell in love with him! Pete always swears that Shawnie brings all of her Greyhounds into her house, because they always act like they know what to do - and Licorice certainly did know! He made himself right at home.

Yes, we have had a few problems - not too bad - but he is 15 months old! Let's see, he has chewed my glasses - I needed new ones anyway! He chewed the cord on my heating pad - needed a new one of those too. The remote control ended up in his mouth, but I rescued it! Duct tape is a wonderful thing! He opened the drawer of my bedside table and chewed some Tea Tree gel, some antibiotic ointment, a pen and a jar of carmex. None of this seemed to bother him - well, maybe a little gas! Also I had a nice Autumn display made - I had even done something I saw on "Martha Stewart Living." After Halloween I sprayed my pumpkins gold - they looked so pretty! And believe me, I don't even understand most of Martha Stewart's stuff! Anyway, Licorice ate half of one of the small ones. I caught him before he finished it - the pumpkin wouldn't have hurt him, but remember it was sprayed with gold paint! Guess the paint didn't hurt him either - just more gas.
