The Federal Election Commission or FEC has ruled, by unanimous opinion, that the Green Party of the United States is a legally recognized national political party. The vote was taken in November, so it’s been official for over a month now. This is another step forward for The Greens. Now there is a centrally recognized political party that can only help the Greens.
With this ruling the Greens can now accept contributions up to $20,000 per year from an individual. But the Greens themselves limit it to donations of $10,000. Another Green limit is to refuse any contributions from corporations. Greens believe that not being beholden to corporations will be another step in turning this country into one that is looking forward with people and the planet in mind and not just profits for today. Steve Schmidt, whose in the Platform Committee stated in the USGP press release, "The Green Party is the only political party to oppose the big money that is corrupting politics in America. We're the only party that chooses to regulate itself more strictly than the federal government." Limiting contributions from individuals and none from corporations does make the campaigns more difficult when faced with the millions and millions of dollars pored into campaigns these days. But Greens still continue to get elected, and with increasing numbers. This year alone there has been a record number of Greens elected into various office. There has been 58 Greens that won their election race, bringing the total number of Greens in office in the United States to 120. Most of the positions are to city councils or school board positions, although there are a few Green Mayor’s including Santa Monica, California. This year, 2001 there were 280 candidates that ran in various races in 25 different states for 67 types of different offices. More Greens won their race this year in 2001 than any previous odd numbered year. We expect the number to grow even more next year. 2001 has been a strong year for the Greens and we can only expect the Greens to grow stronger as the years progress, and as more people look to an alternative between the two major parties, that look more alike each day. This ruling is another step in the right direction towards a new political party to lead this country into a sustainable future for everyone today and in the years to come. Go To Page: 1 2
